[EXCERPT] . . . .

In "Upon Wedlock, and Death of Children," Edward Taylor also offers all the glory to God. However, Taylor's poem is not constructed as a sermon as Wigglesworth's is. Taylor's poetry is in some ways more purely literary in form and function than Wigglesworth's, which comes across as being pedantic and brimming with the fervency of a Church minister. Although Taylor was a pastor, he did not exhibit the same type of animated tone in his poetry as Wigglesworth does. Taylor also came from the Puritanical perspective, though, and God is central to his writing. Taylor's poetry does have a rhyme scheme, although one that is not as regular and nursery-like as Wigglesworth's. In "Upon Wedlock, and Death of Children," the rhyme scheme is generally ABABCC. The length of stanzas does not vary in Wigglesworth's "Day of Doom" but the stanzas are of varying size in Taylor's "Upon Wedlock, and Death of Children."

An ABABCC rhyme scheme is also used in Bradstreet's "The Prologue." Bradstreet's poems are less overtly Puritanical than either Taylor or Wigglesworth's. "The Prologue" enforces traditional Puritanical gender roles and norms, though. For example, the poet writes, "Men can do best, and women know it well." Bradstreet's poetry provides greater insight into the actual lives of Puritans than either Taylor or Wigglesworth. The poetry of Bradstreet occasionally refers to Puritanical religion of course, but the poet is not solely concerned with Christian dogma. It is not just their religious sentiments that are described in Bradstreet's Puritan poetry, but also social customs, gender roles, and even the details of daily life. For example, "Verses upon the Burning of our House, July 18th, 1666" tells the story of
