[EXCERPT] . . . .

Analysis in this area can range from broad and clearly observable details such as a specific style of dress or evidence of certain tools or implements used in a particular trade or activity to more minute investigations of fibers and other material samples to determine more specific scenarios of explanation (Jones et al., 2008; Warren, 2008). Shoddier clothing; evidence of a lower-quality, more affordable, or homespun type of cloth; certain adornments such as jewelry (or the lack thereof) can all help the forensic archaeologist/anthropologist determine the possible socioeconomic status of the person to whom a skeleton once belonged (Jones et al., 208; Penn, 2011). Knowledge of the particular culture is most often necessary to draw such conclusions, but as long as such information is available this is a very useful method.

Forensic taphonomy, which examines alterations to the skeleton at the time of death and following the person's demise, is less useful for deriving information about the individual that used to walk the earth (Gale, 2006). Certain details about the cause of death could potentially yield clues about the individuals' station in life, however; evidence of physical trauma combined with other observed details could tell a tale of economically- or occupationally-related violence, for instance (Penn, 2011). Using this branch of anthropology in conjunction with the others mentioned above will yield no shortage of valuable information.

Quoted Instructions for "Anthropology How an Anthropologist Knows" Assignment:

An archeologist and an anthropologist are studying two skeletons from an ancient tomb that had apparently been looted in an earlier time. Both skeletons are females; both are approximately the same height. However, the anthropologist is absolutely certain that one skeleton is the remains of someone from the privilage class while the other skeleton is the remains of servant or slave. How could the anthropologist be so sure of the econoomic status of the individuals based solely on their skeletal remains?
