[EXCERPT] . . . .

When people are educated to the effects of CAFO's and the location of such places, they can then mobilize local communities to force changes in their practices. Such local activism can also force the government to increase their regulations and inspections, and insist upon greater transparency from these farms. And while new technology has a place in the future, it is the incorporation of alternative farming practices which holds the key to the future existence of agriculture. Since it is the concentration of livestock production in small areas that seems to be the cause of the problems, what is needed is a change to a medium-sized organic-style farms. Not only will this decrease the environmental impact of CAFO's in the local community, but it will open the possibility for more locally grown organic produce to be consumed instead of food produced in a variety of distant places. And when local organically-grown produce is consumed, then the large amount of transportation, waste, runoff, and other pollutants is avoided.

The Earth can absorb a certain amount of waste from human activity, much like a filter, but only if it is done in small amounts and over time. The existence of CAFO's is a disruption of the natural filtering process because they produce too much waste materials in too confined an area. As a result, there has been significant damage to the environment from CAFO's and their byproducts. But there is an alternative way to farm and when people operate smaller, organic farms in their local areas they can still have the agricultural and livestock products they want without the massive environmental and health problems associated with large industrialized farms.
