[EXCERPT] . . . .

While a small organ, it is extermely important in that it acts as a routing mechnanism for nerve connections that go to and from the brain to the rest of the anatomical systems. Also it plays an important role in regulating cardiac and respitory function, and is one of the most important parts of regulating the sleep cycle and consciousness. As noted, the brain stem is a "conductor" of sorts -- routing signals to and from the brain -- during this process it utilizes up to 12 cranial nerves and allows the body to remain alert when needed, but strongly regulates sleep in order to allow the brain to rest and recoup.

Spinal Cord -- The spinal cord is the pathway that connects the impulses from the brain to the limbs and rest of the body. It is a long, thin, tubular body of neural tissue and support cells which, together with the brain, make up the central nervous system. The cord itself is enclosed in a bony protective sheath called the spinal column and serves three major functions: to serve as a conduit for motor information -- electrical stimulation that travels from the brain to the body down via the spinal cord; to serve as a conduit for sensory information, electrical stimulation that comes from the body up through the cord and into the brain; and a center for the coordination of numerous bodily reflexes.
