Careers in Human Resource Management

Upon graduation I hope to enter the field of human resource management. According to John Bratton and Jeffery Gold (1999) human resource management is defined by a body of knowledge and a set of practices that establish the nature of the work and regulate the employment relationship. This occupation encompasses the administration of five basic functions. Staffing entails obtaining people with appropriate skills to fill jobs in the organization. This involves planning, job analysis, recruitment and selection. Another function of the job is the design and administration of a rewards system. This includes job evaluation, performance appraisal, and the establishment and distribution of benefits. Employee development is the examination of training requirements so that employees have the necessary knowledge and skills required to perform their duties satisfactorily or to advance in the organization. Performance appraisal also helps to identify employee key skills and aptitudes. Employee maintenance requires the monitoring of workplace safety, and health and welfare policies with the aim of retaining a competent workforce and compiling with statutory standards and regulations. Employee relations cover a broad spectrum of issues. Responsibilities in this area vary depending on whether the work place is union or non-union. In union environment responsibilities also include negotiations between management and union representatives over decisions affecting the employee contract.

Quoted Instructions for "Human Resource Management Careers" Assignment:

The Assignment, Your Topic:

The topic for this paper is your occupation. When you graduate, what field will you choose for your occupation? What career feeds your passion? Your hopes? Your dreams?

For this final project, you will research your chosen field of interest to discover what opportunities are available, the functions of positions in this field (what do people in this field do every day and in general), the education necessary to succeed (degrees, certificates, specific courses, internships, etc.) and the pros, cons, and expectations for the people entering the field. You may even want to research the demand for positions in this field.

After completing the research, you will need to analyze what you have found and put it into perspective for you and for your reader. Do you think you are making the correct decisions about your career path? Does your college plan provide you with the courses you need to succeed in your chosen career? What are the next steps you will need to take to get closer to your career goals?

When you write about whether this professional field is the correct career for you, try to incorporate some of the concepts learned throughout this term including learning styles, personal habits, time management skills, personality, etc. Use what you have learned about yourself this term to inform your career decision.

Please note: If you have not decided what field you will follow when you graduate, choose one or two that interest you. This is your opportunity to explore! If you are already in your chosen field, take this time to explore projections about changes and future growth.

Then,

*****¢ Type your citations. Each citation should be double spaced and left-justified (remember every line after the first is indented).

Style and Mechanics

This is a final project and should therefore reflect your highest quality work. Here are some guidelines:

Language style:

The language should be clear, concise and emphatic; that is, each sentence should be easy to understand, direct and make an important point. Avoid using *****filler sentences***** or impressive vocabulary words that add nothing to the content. Simple is usually better.

Tone:

Writing for a research paper should take on a formal, scholarly tone. Do not write in a conversational style. Avoid contractions and slang.

Mechanics:

Errors in spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and grammar all impact readability. Spell check and grammar check are useful tools, but there is no substitute for double checking your work. I recommend that you proofread your work at least three times. I also recommend that you read your work out loud to yourself or to an audience to ensure that your words and meaning are clear.
