[EXCERPT] . . . .

This organizational scheme is indicative of the literature reviews structure, as the authors continue to make assertive suppositions regarding the impact of derailed management before providing the basis for these assertions in the form of peer-reviewed academic research and objective scientific studies.

The authors of the literature review also cite the foremost pioneer in the study of managerial derailment, referring to no less than four studies authored by V.J. Bentz -- including a 30-year longitudinal study of Sears Roebuck and Company in which the core causes of managerial incompetence were originally identified. In addition to the typical text-based literature review construct, the authors also include a simple table used to illustrate the "Estimated Base Rates for Management Failure" across a wide spectrum of studies published between 1985 (Bentz) and 2005 (Charan). This supplemental resource is intended to provide additional context through which the wider conclusions of the literature review can be interpreted, as the linear nature of the data presented indicates that the expected occurrence of ineffective leadership has remained steady, with a mean of 47% and a median of 50%. The standardization of this figure is quite compelling when one considers the increased rate of research devoted to improving management-based best practices, because no amount of scientific study seems capable of reducing the instance of management derailment. After a rigorous review of the prevailing research on this phenomenon, a second table is provided by the authors which reveals the most oft-cited deficiencies in terms of skillset or ability that conspire to create failed leaders and incompetent managers. table reveals that bad bosses invariably possess an aversion to delegation, an unwillingness to communicate and the inability to inspire genuine respect or leadership. As the authors of the literature review state in their Conclusion section, "research on the characteristics of bad leaders converges quite nicely & #8230; (and) the behaviors associated with managerial derailment are well documented and are relevant to most organizations and most managers" (Hogan, Hogan & Kaiser, 2010), and their article is a useful resource when attempting to synthesize decades of research in an effective and efficient fashion.

Quoted Instructions for "Human Resources Literature Review" Assignment:

Locate a review of the literature, ideally related to your inquiry topic or specialization area. My specialization is Human Resources and the topic I have chosen is bad bosses.

The article you select must not be a research paper. That is, the article should be one where the authors are attempting to answer one or more questions by referring to articles that have been published. The literature review you select must not include primary or secondary data collected and analyzed by the authors of the paper.

Write a 2- to 3-page summary of the article. You do not need to read any of the articles discussed in the literature review; you only need to report on the literature review. Use APA 6th edition style and formatting throughout your literature review.

Include the four items listed below in your report:

1. The strategy or criteria the author uses to select the works reviewed. 2. How the author organizes the presentation of the works reviewed. For example, the author may organize the presentation by time, by focus, or by methodology. 3. The level of analysis the author uses to describe the research. For example, the author may examine articles about individuals, groups, organizations, or industries. 4. The limitations, implications, and recommendations the author identifies.

Link the literature review article you used for this assignment with a persistent link to your article.
