[EXCERPT] . . . .
("Australian Mine Disaster," 1998) (Perrin, 2010)In the case of BHP Billiton, they have faced the same amount of scrutiny, but have engaged in a policy of denying any wrong doing. This has caused many different accidents to be swept under the rug. From a political standpoint, the company can use this strategy to slow any kind of regulatory actions and influence various laws. Socially, this policy has allowed the company to maintain a certain public image (by not accepting full responsibility for accidents). Ethically, the BHP Billiton managers are more focused on addressing the company's profit objectives. This means that they have to reduce costs (including safety) to meet this goal. Legally, the company can use this strategy to force investigators to prove that they have engaged in any kind of negligence. This is important, because it shows how BHP Billiton has taken an approach of: denial and delay when it comes to mine safety. (Stevens, 2007)
Provide substantive conclusion and recommendations
Clearly, BHP Billiton has engaged in a policy of not addressing various safety concerns at its different properties around the world. This is problematic, because it means that it is only a matter of time until a major tragedy occurs. As a result, the company needs to learn and follow the example set by Rio Tinto. Where, a major accident caused them to make the added investments in safety (due to the negative impact that it was having on their overall bottom line). In this case BHP Billiton, they need to learn from this, so that they do not have to go through similar kinds of challenges in the future.
