[EXCERPT] . . . .

Such insects are forced to find new homes in ecosystems not yet contaminated by man's littering.

Animals can suffer in other ways, as well. Litter can be deadly for wildlife. As Wieman notes, "entanglement causes animals to die slowly. Birds are particularly susceptible to entanglement as they collect material for their nests" (Wieman, 2012). Likewise, animals can often eat or swallow litter while foraging for sustenance. This can cause animals to become sick from malnutrition. Or they can starve to death if litter happens to become lodged in "the animal's intestinal tract," as often happens (Wieman, 2012). Litter can also realease "toxic substances" that pollute soil and seabeds where fish live, resulting in the death of fish in streams and rivers. People who unwittingly eat contaminated fish are also subject to the effects of their own littering: they too can become sick and deathly ill.

Conclusion

One of the ways littering can be countered and stopped is by the change in social attitudes towards cleanliness and sanitary environments. Littering is mainly caused by people who have lost their sense of responsibility and have adopted a sense of entitlement toward their environment, allowing them to improperly dispose of waste materials since they believe that "someone else" will clean it up. One way to change this attitude is to educate people on the detrimental effects of littering and to clean up those areas already affected by littering. Even children can be taught to appreciate the finer side of properly disposing of waste. The EarthWorks Group (1990) teaches children to advocate recycling and precycling: "If we recycle and precycle we will produce a

lot less garbage, and help keep our planet green" (p. 14). By simply being alert to the effect we ourselves have on our surroundings, we as people take a big step in the direction of protecting our environment and ensuring its survival.
