Manzano understood the need for the abolition of slavery, and this is evident tacitly and explicitly in his autobiography. In particular, Manzano notes that eventually people will feel shamed for owning slaves (p. 17). He knew he was in a relatively high status position for a slave, and still felt constrained and abused. However, it was later in his life when he met the political group and Domingo del Monte that he became even more conscious of the need for abolition and his role in promoting abolition through his writing.

Because Manzano's life was relatively blessed, in spite of his abusive mistress, he might not have participated in a community of runaway slaves or joined a slave revolt. Manzano remained an artist and poet throughout his life. He had a political and philosophical mindset, and was not prone to violence or aggression. His life could be considered sheltered, as he learned how to sew, do art, and write. This served to isolate Manzano from his own community -- and from his slave peers. His social position was ironic in that he was not accepted as being part of the dominant culture because he was a black slave;

but Manzano could also not become a significant part of the African culture or community because of his privileged status.
