Middle East/Gulf region

The Middle East region and in a large view the Greater Middle East is one of the most significant geographical, strategic, spiritual and historical areas of the world. It is found between two other great civilizations, the European and the Asian one and it is the origin of the most important religions besides the Asian ones like Christianity, Islam or Judaism. The Greater Middle East is also the birthplace of some of the most meaningful civilizations of mankind like the Sumerian, Assyrian, Babylonian, Egyptian, Persian or Median ones.

One of the most important socio-political events that took place in this tumultuous region was the seventh century Arabic conquest of the most part of the region, removing the Byzantine and Sassanid Persians from the area. The newly formed Muslim Empire, run by the Caliphs, was to dominate the Greater Middle Eastern region, and parts of Southern Europe until the middle of the eleventh century, creating an amazing civilization and culture, but most of all a religious identity that would be to remain almost intact in face of various other passing empires. The beginning of the end of the Arab Empire came with the Seljuq Turks who had a profound effect on the entire region, weakening and eliminating not only the Arabs but also the Christian Byzantine Empire. For the next two hundred years, the major force in the region became the Turks yet their lack of unity against the common enemies from the West and East did not allow them to continue their rule. The weakening of the fractured sultanates became obvious during the Western crusades started in 1099 and 1291 that cracked the force of the already fragile unity of sultanates.Continue scrolling to

The next large scale Empire that would have an influence in the Greater Middle East was the Ottoman Empire who came just after the Mongol hoards that advanced all the way to the borders of Egypt at the beginning of the thirteen-century. These were pushed back by predecessors of the ottomans, the Mamluk Turks that were able to keep the Ottoman influence lower in the Middle East until 1514. Before that, with the conquering in 1453 of Constantinople, and the following 1516 Syrian and 1517 Egyptian conquering,… READ MORE

Explanation of Essays

You are to write formal (APA style) essays-papers, approximately 500 words each from a selection of topics covered in class.

The format for the essay should not only be a review and contain a summary of what other critics say about the work. The major purpose of it is to voice your concerns, views and opinions based on correct and logical evidences.

You should be reflective (think deeply and engage in multiple rewrites).

Since the required word count is 500+ words each paper (please keep writing within 100 words in either direction).

Format of essay:

A. Introduction *****" Your introductory paragraph should set the stage for what is to follow. Use a catchy first line to grab the reader*****s attention. In this paragraph you should present the central theme, the thesis statement, and facts surrounding the main theme. Any important definitions and terms that will have relevance in the body can be defined and explained here if necessary.

B. Short summary - Provide a very brief summary of the work being reviewed. Then preview your argument, briefly stating what you will attempt to prove your argument. Never present any more than the minimum that the reader needs to know to understand your argument.

C. Body *****" This should be the bulk of your paper. It is where the scope of the essay should be explored and where the facts and data presented in the article are analyzed and checked for their logic and accuracy. It is where you will present details of the reviewed material and where you ask the critical questions we have covered so far in the course. It should clearly demonstrate how your analysis and evaluation influences how you reacted to the reasoning. Most importantly, it should be your argument and not a summary. You need to cite your information and use parenthetical citation or footnotes / endnotes.

D. Conclusion *****" This final paragraph should sum up your overall conclusions. It should not contain any new or additional information. It should very briefly restate the ideas or arguments that have already been presented in the paper and more so point out the importance of your argument. Provide an interesting closing - a striking statement or a dramatic example with reference back to the thesis statement, making an impact and signaling the end of your essay.
