Bunyan also employs the technique of alternatives. He presents a problem and then gives some alternative solutions which help the reader learn more about such concepts as faith, logic and decision making. For example when Mistrust and Timorous threaten Christian, he thinks of the alternative escape routes present to him and employs logic to choose the safer route. (36) On another occasion, when he encounters danger in the shape of Fiends, he uses faith as declares "I will walk in the strength of the Lord God" (52). Stanley Fish observes: "Christian is released (or releases himself) from his impasse when he reaches a decision that has nothing to do with the rational process that has preceded it. His action is not taken because of his analysis of the situation, but in spite of it." (276).

As we mentioned above, form along could have turned Bunyan's work dull and useless for modern readers. The reason this book remained popular for decades, in fact centuries, was primarily because Bunyan's imaginative devices of dialogue and drama worked for audiences in modern times. Seed notes that Bunyan's use of these devices demonstrated "an extremely sophisticated awareness of different levels of discourse and considerable skill at characterization" (69). The great playwright George Bernard Shaw praised Bunyan for his intelligent use of dialogue that "go straight to the mark" (quoted in Batson 45). There are many occasions in the book when we can sense how dialogue worked better than if the author had used the indirect speech of what each character said.

d allegory to give a picture which appeals to the senses. In such passages as Hell, Giant Despair, Vanity Fair, we find some excellent example of imagery. Poetry has also been used effectively to convey teachings. These are parallel in style to the hymns found in the New Testament. These poems resemble the style employed in the hymns and also convey some essentials messages of faith. Altogether there are more than 19 poems in the book which are sprinkled with warnings, feelings of joy, reminders etc. But while poems may have been effective, they are not good according to modern standards. They were primarily used as a drilling device- to remind people of various teachings in a succinct manner.

Humor was another important device used by the author. He is responsible for leaving us some very famous proverbs such as "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush"; "Hedges have eyes and little pitchers have ears"; and "Penny wise and pound foolish." His sharp wit made John Livingston Lowes shrewdly comments: "English comedy lost a master when Bunyan was born Puritan" (63).

Bunyan thus used many effective devices to make his writings more interesting. But his main purpose for producing this work was grounded in his strong Christian beliefs and the responsibility of teaching. He was thus a good teacher and a great preacher for most Christians of his time and influenced many subsequent generations. Dean Stanley of Westminster remembered him "as the dear teacher of the childhood of each of us, as the creator of those characters whose names and faces are familiar to the whole world" (qtd. In Nelson, p. 166-67).

Critical Research

Description: The research paper is an integral part of English 201. As a matter of fact, it accounts fro 20% of your final grade for the class. Thus, it is imperative that all students submit a research paper and equally imperative that you do well on this assignment. This project is designed to give you, the student, an opportunity to study a topic or literary work beyond the scope of what takes place in class. You have the privilege of reviewing others opinions and then using those views to support your thesis about the subject.

Choose a poem (sonnets, dream allegory, elegy, ode, dramatic monologue), play, essay, satire, or any genre that may be representative of the works of the Anglo-Saxon Period to the Restoration and Eighteenth Century.

Write an eight to ten page research paper that analyzes some aspect of your chosen work.

Your analysis can focus on one of the various aspects of literature (character, plot, setting, tone, symbolism, language usage and devices, imagery, satire, Etc,) as it is depicted in the work or on the specific features of the genre. You may also choose a comparative approach for your analysis. For example, you may consider how the theme “fall of man” is developed in Dr. Faustus and Paradise lost. Or you may compare Medieval and Renaissance drama using Everyman and Faustus, Utopia and The Rape of the Lock as satires. Another consideration is the epic form as used in Paradise lost and The Rape of the Lock.

Formulate a clear thesis statement, that makes an assertion about the work(s) or an aspect on the total development of the work.

Then write a well-developed and documented argument on the topic.

Follow MLA Guidelines for citations and documentation. You should include at least five secondary sources in support for the argument. (You may also refer to the booklet given in class for help with documentation.) In case of electronic sources, those too must be properly documented in text and at the end of the text.

Your paper should be double spaced and include a title page. The title of you paper should appear on the title page and on the first page of the text.

Paradigm for Analysis of Literary Works

The following model is designed to provide the student with a guide for writing an analysis of poetry, fiction, or drama.

Introduction: Identification of the work by title of genre

Brief summary in twon to three sentences

Relevant background information

Relevant facts about the author that have direct bearing on the work

Relevant quotations and / or paraphrases from authorities that establish the literary tradition.

Thesis sentence that establishes your critical appraisal of the work

(1-2 paragraphs)

Body: An analysis of elements such as imagery, symbolish, theme, character development, structure, style, language, point of view, in relation to the thesis. You may also analyze the work from the aspect of a critical approach such as feminism, reader response, etc. The thesis should serve as the unifying element for exploration of these or other elements

Note: an analysis is certainly enhanced in effectiveness and scholarship when it contains examples from the work itself, references, allusions to similar works, and quotations (used sparingly) with all properly documented. (The most detailed and developed part of the paper)

Conclusion: There a re numerous effective ways to conclude and analysis. In additon to providing an overall impression of the work, you may comment upon how effectively the author has employed the particular element in the work. IN particular, the conclusion explores the contribution to the ***** in accordance with the thesis. But in whatever way you close your analysis, make it sensible, original, relevant and interesting.
