Substance Abuse Reduction Log

Day 1-09/25

The tendency of smoking two cigars on a daily basis for the seemingly therapeutic value or feeling that it has is the substance abuse that I am struggling to fight to end. The fight against this habit begins today and already at the onset it is a challenge since I have a strong craving for the 4 pm cigar that I usually use to crown the day after a long day at work. My work is stressful, extremely uncomfortable due to the people that I deal with and my supervisor at the school where I teach the subject of social studies. The students also present various challenges due to behavior issues and the extreme indiscipline. It is not a job I enjoy doing but due to the necessity to pay my bills, I have to keep doing it. This pressure leads me to smoking cigar each day in order to help forget the torturous day. I often smoke a cigar at 4pm after work and one more cigar before I go to bed at 10 pm just as a reassurance that I shall wake up to a better day the following day and head to work. The cigar works as a motivator to me and a consolation from the daily stressful job environment.

My Monday evenings are often marked by me going to a nearby restaurant, especially during the football season, and at the bar and watch the football games as I have my dinner. After dinner, I often go to the cigar bar and some a few cigars just for entertainment and because there were others smoking at the same place. However, due to the program I have started for myself to quit cigar smoking, I opted to leave the restaurant immediately I was done taking dinner and went to finish watching the remaining games at home. I am starting a long journey of quitting cigar smoking

and other recreational drugs and I have high hopes that it will be a big success.

Day 2 -09/26

It is the second day of my fight to quit cigar and the craving for cigar still remains very strong, at least my two cigars on a daily basis. I often take one cigar at 4pm to end my daily struggles in the school teaching career under conditions that are extremely difficult, and another one cigar at 10 pm to help me sleep a hopeful man for a better tomorrow. Teaching in a high school in not an easy task as it comes with workload pressure and also performance concern and the social expectations from the students that I handle on a daily basis. The cigar to me is a therapy for the stress I undergo throughout the day and also a therapy to assure myself of being able to handle the next day.

This day I really felt the urge to smoke at least some puffs of the cigar after I was done with the open house. There were various activities during the open house session that needed keen attention and in effect stressed me up to an extent that once it was done I just wanted to have some relief in the form of cigar. Each time I meet close friends, I share with them my quest to quit smoking cigar and my daily struggles with the same and they are often very encouraging. One such very encouraging person is Berta who not only encouraged me to stay the course but also share a few other cases of friends that she encouraged and stood by them to the very successful end. She vowed to walk by me and help me in overcoming the challenges on a day to day walk since we often meet at the school.

Day 3-09/27

Despite being day 3 of my personal decision to quit smoking cigar, the struggle is really taking toll on me. I have a strong craving for my two cigars daily as was before. The urge has not gone down yet and the mind is clouded with the urge to go and buy cigars on my way to work in order to use in the evening. At work, I really looked forward to the day coming to an end and going back to my house to smoke at least a cigar. My work is stressful and challenging leaving me drained at the end of the day. This makes me hate my job day in day out and only engaging in it for my bills sake. I always have craving for cigar to ease the stress I encounter while at work. This day was not any different from the others. On this day I had a really strong urge to smoke a cigar at 4pm just when I arrived at home from work. It was my norm to smoke one immediately I got into the house after work to cool me off. This reflex, like that of the Pavlov dog keeps coming back each time I open my front door and hang my coat. I was determined on this day too to overcome the urge to smoke cigar. While going to sleep, one of my preparations for bed time was to smoke a cigar, a temptation that I successfully resisted for three days now and it went well. It is becoming clear each day that substance abuse reduction is not as easy as many may presume it to be. It involves a lot of steps and taxes the mind and body each day, with the environmental factors sometimes remaining the same yet I want to change the resultant addiction to the cigar smoking habit.

Day 4-09/28

On this day I woke up to go to my usual place of work at the high school that I teach social studies. I was not enthusiastic about getting to my place of work at all but I had my cigars in my mind. It was a reflex that just came to my mind as I woke up and was preparing for the day. This far I have kept off smoking cigar, I already felt like I miss my two cigars so much. Yesterday I never smoked them and my body was demanding a compensation of the cigar time.

My work, as usual, does not inspire my enthusiasm and today too looks and feels like a ritual that I have to go through. I have one more day for the week to end and already I cannot wait to have this week done so that I can take a weekend break and rejuvenate my spirit. In the evening after work, I got into the house and the first thing that I wanted was a cigar to help me numb my feelings about my job. The cigar acted as a break between my boring daily job and the personal life that I should be getting into after work. I successfully resisted the urge to smoke and it makes me proud. Being a Thursday I usually go to the nearby restaurant to watch the proceedings of the football season since it had been three days since I was here. The watching of the games was interrupted by smokers who occasionally walked out to smoke, the urge was irresistible. At around 10pm I went back home to finish watching the remaining part of the games from home. Before I slept I said to myself I will not smoke one more cigar as my personal pursuit was to end the addictive habit I had of smoking at 4pm and 10pm. As I retired to bed for the night I felt a victor, one who had conquered the stress of my workplace and the constant craving for the cigar that had for years formed part of my daily recreation.

Day 5-09/29

This is day 5 of my personal pursuit to quit cigar smoking and the craving for the cigar, these two rolls of cigar, is as strong as before. There is however no relating in the day ahead and I must stay true to the decision that I made as an individual. This day, being the last day of the week, had to be made interesting as possible. The day was a stressful as any other, the work load in school was much, the challenges from students from their social life increased even further as the week came towards the end. It seems even the students have that stretch limit beyond which they feel constrained by the activity packed schedule of the entire week. Throughout my day at work, I kept thinking of the two cigars that I would be retiring home to at the end of the day if it were not for the reduction program I had started for my benefit. The work was boring and that made the day to drag on slowly, or maybe it was because I had already set my mind to the start of the weekend at the end of… READ MORE
