[EXCERPT] . . . .
Although such eruptions can be destructive, humans can usually avoid the lava flow and are rarely threatened by such volcanic activity" (U.S., Dept. Of Interior, 2012).The interpretation of the volcanoes and their activity is essential to understand the environment. For instance "An interesting variation of a composite volcano can be seen at Crater Lake in Oregon. From what geologists can interpret of its past, a high volcano -- called Mount Mazama- probably similar in appearance to present-day Mount Rainier was once located at this spot." (USGS, 2011) Such information is vital because it points out the basics of existence for certain natural phenomena. Even so, without advanced technological means of analysis, geologists would not be able to determine structure or age dating. From this point-of-view, both relative and radiometric means of age dating are vital.
The relative method for determining age on rocks in particular follow a relative pattern in the sense that it provides the scientists with an approximate period for the respective rock based on assumptions (Hall, 2007). By contrast, radiometric age dating is more scientific and is based on more elaborate analysis with isotopes and C14. While the first one is useful for approximation, the second one is used for precision. Although both of them are useful, the radiometric method is more precise and can provide a better and more accurate answer on the origin and age of a rock.

Quoted Instructions for "Volcanoes Generally Preserved Geologic Rock" Assignment:
Volcanoes are generally not preserved in the geologic rock record as they are usually eroded away. However, the various materials erupted from volcanoes are often found preserved in the rock record. From what you have learned about the different types of volcanoes, how could you infer what type of volcano erupted in a given area based on the type of volcanic deposits now found as layers of rock? Give specific examples, and briefly discuss how some materials may be linked to different types of volcanoes.
Compare and contrast relative age dating with radiometric dating. What are the strengths and limitations (if any) of each?
