Clearly starting any new program, especially one that involves poverty in a community, evolves over time. For Canada, he was always willing to cut his losses and change his plan. But the big picture for Canada -- his mission -- and this is one of the most impressive points of the book, is the betterment of not just Harlem, but of Black America. "In a very real way, he is trying to deliver his race as much as he is trying to save a neighborhood," Tough explains on page 99 of the book.In conclusion, it is informative, enlightening, and educational to read Tough's book because such a powerful story about education and poverty hasn't been told in quite the same way previously. Whether other leaders and teachers will follow in Canada's footsteps and help young people of all ethnicities (who are seemingly stuck in a culture of poverty) achieve skills that can carry them out of poverty is yet to be seen. Certainly, the Harlem Children's Zone is a far more visionary and yet practical solution than "No Child Left Behind." Canada's quest and his success should be repeated all across the country in places where poverty exists.…
